At our small workshop in western Massachusetts, we believe in sustainability and craftsmanship when it comes to all of our products. Our wood salad tossers are no exception. We use only locally sourced, upcycled wood to make our tossers, starting with rough turned bowls that are not suitable for a finished product.
We turn them into unique and beautiful pieces perfectly suited for tossing your favorite salads. To ensure they are safe to use for food, we use all natural, 100% food-safe finishes. Our wood salad tossers pair nicely with our wooden salad bowls, creating a lovely set for your table.
The Importance of Sustainably Sourcing Wood Products
At Spencer Peterman, we recognize the importance of responsibly sourcing our materials to minimize our carbon footprint and environmental impact. That’s why we only use locally sourced upcycled wood to make our wooden salad tossers. By giving this wood a new purpose, we are not only reducing waste, but also supporting our local community and reducing transportation emissions.
Using wooden salad tossers or wood salad servers is not only a sustainable choice, but also a beautiful and practical one. These utensils add a rustic charm to your table setting, and are the perfect complement to our wooden salad bowls.
We craft our wood salad tossers by hand in our Western MA workshop with techniques that ensure the utmost quality and attention to detail. When you choose to buy our wooden salad servers, you’re not only supporting our small business. You’re also making a conscious choice to reduce your impact on the planet.
From Forest to Table: Sourcing our Wood
At our workshop, we believe in only using upcycled, locally sourced wood for our wooden salad servers. This limits our wood types to what’s native to our area. On the flip side, we get to work with nature’s creativity. Ambrosia maple, spalted maple, and burl wood are some of our favorite mediums.
Our logs are mainly sourced from local tree services, and would otherwise be burned, chipped, or left to rot. If you’re a nearby homeowner who’s having some tree work done, know that we’re always on the lookout for maple, oak, black walnut, cherry, or burl wood with a diameter of at least 16 inches.
By sourcing our wood responsibly, we’re doing our part in ensuring that our products are eco-friendly and promote sustainable practices. With each wooden salad server we create, we’re preserving the beauty of nature and showcasing its unique charm in your home.
Crafting Our Wood Salad Tossers by Hand
At our workshop in Turners Falls, our skilled woodworker Stu Doogan takes great pride in crafting each of our wood salad servers by hand. Using his years of experience and expertise, Stu transforms rough turned bowls that are not suitable for finishing into beautiful and functional salad tossers.
Nothing goes to waste in our workshop. We repurpose even the smallest scraps of wood. We use them to heat one of our workshops or give them to a local artisan who transforms them into stunning wooden spoons.
Stu’s meticulous attention to detail ensures that each wood salad server is crafted to perfection.
By handcrafting our wood salad tossers, we are able to ensure the highest quality and craftsmanship in each piece. This dedication to traditional techniques and sustainable practices is what sets our wood salad servers apart. They are truly unique addition to your kitchen.
