Spalted maple wears its history on the surface. Pale wood streaked with dark tracings, every line different, every bowl its own. The live edge rim follows the tree’s original path, rising and dipping in ways no template could plan. Inside, the surface is smooth and ready for use; outside, the edge shows the forest’s hand.
Small bowls fit fruit, nuts, or quick side dishes. Larger pieces open up for bread, roasted vegetables, or family-style salads. Their markings are unpredictable, sometimes bold, sometimes delicate. Because of that, they stand on their own as sculptural pieces as easily as they serve at the table.
In Gill, Massachusetts, we turn each bowl by hand from locally salvaged maple. Storm-fallen or discarded logs are reclaimed, milled, and shaped into forms meant to last. The interiors are sealed with a food-safe oil; the edges are left natural. What would have gone to waste becomes a bowl built for daily use, carrying both craft and character.
