No two burls ever grow the same way. In maple, that means pale wood streaked with caramel, sometimes scattered with birdseye specks, sometimes quilted in flame-like ripples. The rim is never predictable. It dips, lifts, curves. What you get is less a circle than a landscape, shaped by the tree itself.
These bowls are as practical as they are unusual. The small ones are easy to leave out on a kitchen shelf, catching fruit or nuts. The bigger pieces take on salads, bread, or enough greens for a crowd. Empty, they hold their own. The grain looks like a topographic map, the edge more sculpture than line.
Each is hand-turned in Gill, Massachusetts, from salvaged maple burls. The inside is sanded smooth and finished with a food-safe oil; the outside is left as it grew. Nothing added but craft, and a way of working that reclaims what would otherwise be lost.
